UOC Primate leads Moleben on Day of Baptism of Rus on St.Volodymyr’s Hill

According to preliminary calculations tens of thousands of faithful gathered for the Moleben prayer service

July 27, 2016, on the eve of the festival of Baptism of Rus, and on occasion of the 1000th anniversary of ancient Kyivan Rus monasticism on Holy Mount Athos, the Primate of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church, His Beatitude Metropolitan Onufiry of Kyiv and All Ukraine led the festive Moleben prayer service at the monument The Baptiser of Holy Rus on St. Volodymyr’s Hill. Reports the Information and Education Department of the UOC.

Preceding the Moleben service, a prayer rule formulated by the Primate of the UOC was recited during the All-Ukrainian cross procession. It included the reading of the prayers “Our Father” and “Theotokos Virgin , Rejoice” , they were recited twelve times each followed by a prayer for peace in Ukraine.

Concelebrating with His Beatitude were members of the episcopate, clergy from all the eparchies of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church, the delegation from Holy Mount Athos and praying with them were many thousands of Orthodox faithful from all over Ukraine. The celebrations were also attended by representatives of the government, the State Cabinet of Ukraine and diplomatic representatives of Serbia, Macedonia, Greece, Moldova, Georgia, Russia and Romania.

During the services , prayers were offered for peace in Ukraine .

Before the start of solemn Moleben prayer service, His Beatitude Metropolitan Onufriy congratulated and awarded two small pilgrims who had walked all the way during the Cross procession. A small girl called Margarita of Kramatorsk had walked all the way from Svyatohirsk Lavra and Theodotiya of Dubno, who today turned 11 years old, made the pilgrimage from Pochayiv Lavra.

We recall that yesterday, pilgrims participating in the All-Ukrainian cross procession “For Peace, Love and Prayers for Ukraine” who had made their way from both the west and east of the country finally arrived in Kyiv. Tens of thousands of faithful successfully traversed hundreds of kilometres. From the Svyatohirsk Lavra, pilgrims set off on July 3, and from Pochayiv Lavra – on July 9, and today the prayerful procession completes its course at the Holy Dormition Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra. Assemblin together on St.Volodymyr’s Hill , were Kyivans and faithful from all the eparchies of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church. According to preliminary calculations on occasion of the Baptism of Holy Rus, more than thirty thousand Orthodox believers gathered.

Towards the conclusion of the Moleben , His Beatitude Metropolitan Onufriy congratulated all those present with the festival of the Equiapostolic Prince Volodymyr and delivered a sermon.

At the heads of the two All-Ukrainian cross processions were two miraculous icons: the main holy icon of the eastern procession was the Holy Theotokos of Svyatohirsk, while the Western procession had the – Theotokos of Pochayiv. These and other revered icons from Eastern, Western, Southern and Northern Ukraine were brought to St. Volodymyr’s Hill. After the Moleben, these sacred miraculous icons together with the sacred objects from Holy Mount Athos that were brought to Kyiv for the occasion, will be taken by procession to Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra.

Later today, at 5:00pm , the All-Night Vigil will be celebrated on the square near the Lavra’s Assumption Cathedral, tomorrow in the same square at 9:00 am – the Divine Liturgy will be celebrated . During the Liturgy there will be the glorification ceremony of Ioan Vyshensky – a well-known Ukrainian writer, who for over forty years pursued asceticism on Holy Mount Athos.
