On 17 June 2023, a group of supporters of the ‘Orthodox Church of Ukraine’ came to the Cathedral of the Icon of the Mother of God ‘The Unburnt Bush’ and started to demand that the clergy and parishioners of the cathedral should leave the Ukrainian Orthodox Church. The Information and Education Department of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church informs about it.
Orthodox Christians came to the cathedral in order to protect their shrine from being seized and, after praying, came out to the group of provokers. Having heard the demands of OCU supporters, the priest superior of the cathedral, Archpriest Viktor Tyshkun, gave comprehensive answers to all provocative questions of persons who, while not belonging to the religious community of the cathedral, were trying to decide on its jurisdiction.
Seeing that parishioners of the Cathedral of the Icon of the Mother of God ‘The Unburnt Bush’ unanimously stated their firm and decisive position to remain in the canonical Ukrainian Orthodox Church led by His Beatitude Metropolitan Onufriy, the group of activists had to leave the territory of the church.
‘My heart is wrapped with sadness that in such an important and decisive time, when Ukraine is opposing the Russian aggression, we have compatriots trying to sow animosity among Ukrainians on the home front. The position to stay in the Ukrainian Orthodox Church stated by us today is protected by the Constitution of Ukraine, which all citizens must abide by’, Archpriest Vasyliy Shafar, a clergyman of the cathedral, commented on today’s events.
The priest superior and the clergy of the cathedral expressed sincere gratitude to all members of the religious community for protecting the Orthodox faith and upholding their legal rights to remain in the Ukrainian Orthodox Church, as well as to law enforcement agencies of the town of Netishyn for maintaining legal order during the events mentioned.
